Editorial Reviews: This 13-part TV adaptation of Defoe's classic story is one of the most comprehensive of the many versions made for large or small screen over the years. It was a huge success when broadcast on both sides of the Atlantic in the mid-1960s. One aspect of its appeal was the title theme, which was so popular it was released as a single. The "Main Theme" is an adventurous piece with a slightly melancholy lilt. Thankfully it doesn't re-appear endlessly throughout the score. One effect that does--and takes a little getting used to--is a manipulated bass guitar which strikes what can only be described as "wet" notes! Overall the score is a very varied work, as you'd expect from so much material, including flashbacks that expanded beyond Defoe's original island perimeters. This allowed the composers to stretch beyond merely painting a portrait of loneliness and to capture the quaintness of the English countryside ("Escapades in York") as well as lush beauty of a tropical paradise ("Exploring the Island"). --Paul Tonks

Summary: Magical Music from a Magical Series from a Magical Time
Comment: I bought this album after a search as basically I could not get the theme music out of my head after 40 plus years.

The haunting themes remain one of the great TV programme soundtracks. They were never obtrusive but added to the atmosphere to a stupendous series.

Much recommended to all 40 somethings and makes this reviewer wish for the simpler life and entertainment we had in those halcyon days of the 60's and 70's

Summary: Highly recommended - evocative and beautiful music
Comment: For people of a certain age (40-50) this music evokes treasured memories of childhood. The TV series and the music that went with it had a powerful impact on me as a child and I suspect on many others of my age too - Why? The storyline of Robinson Crusoe can be read on a number of levels - the shipwrecked sailor lost and alone, the contrast between civilisation and the wild, unpredictable but beautiful natural world. The storyline also serves as a metaphor for the many situations all of us encounter at various stages of our lives when we find ourselves struggling in the face of adversity and reminds us that we are all vulnerable and ultimately alone. At these times we need to emulate Robinson Crusoe by showing a determination to overcome our problems and never give in. For me the music reflects all of these emotions wonderfully well. Classically based but with touches of 60's lounge music that tie it to that era. It is both powerful and delicate and truly beautiful. For some of us it is a soundtrack to our childhood and to life. What more can I say? Buy this album, you won't be disappointed.

Summary: An absolute joy
Comment: I completely agree with the review prior to mine . I have longed for this music for 30+ years and had searched for it the same length of time . When I found out that is was now available I ordered it and when it arrived I wept with joy . After a lifetime of collecting albums etc I can now say that I have every piece of music I have ever wanted and Robinson Crusoe is now and forever my most treasured CD. I can never hear enough of that main theme and the following tracks which expand on the theme ( sometimes in slower renditions ) are so beautiful I find it hard not to cry . They evoke the memory of myself as a child every time when the world was a better place and I find myself transported back to 1969/70 when I would watch on Sat mornings before going out to play football. I was lucky enough to hear the full story of how the recordings were found and released from the people at Silva screen records and the remaining composer who died not long after the CD was released which makes this music ever more poignant . When I see and hear the mindless putrid tuneless garbage that is modern music today on Mtv , TOTP etc etc then what a joy it is to get lost in the glorious melodies of this beautiful suite .The only complaint I have is that it is in mono which was to be expected for the time however there is a stereo suite at the end by a European orchestra . I have only two words to say
to anyone pondering about it BUY IT .

Summary: The Adventures of Robinson Crusoe
Comment: I am not usually so taken by things that I feel that I have to put it in writing. This CD is an exception. As soon as I heard the first few bars of the haunting main theme, I was transported back to my younger days. I can remember the anticipation as I waited for the programme to start, and I now know that it was as much for the music as it was for the story itself.
I sat there entralled as I listened to the whole of the CD. It was incredible to think that I last saw this about 30 years ago, and yet each tune gave me the appropriate feeling as I checked it against the listing, remembering how Crusoe was suppposed to be feeling in each situation.
If you are 40 - 55 ish and you have a sense of nostalgia, coupled with the gift of recognising musical expression, then you must buy this CD. For what was apparently a low budget TV series, the mood music is absolutely fantastic, and for me it ranks alongside the classical greats by composers such as Beethoven, Mozart, Chopin et al, and easily compares (for me) with any comtemporary music.
Buy it - you won't regret it.
