Editorial Reviews: It's well known that Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice cut their teeth on Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat before shifting to the New Testament and hitting the big time with Jesus Christ Superstar. And thanks to the box-office clout of Lloyd Webber, as well as the rather sparse supply of new tuneful musicals, this charming little show has reached audiences far beyond the schoolchildren it was intended for. The score shows off Rice's clever lyrics and Lloyd Webber's wide eclectic tastes, with his takes on country, calypso, French café music, Rudy Vallee and Elvis. The show also includes some simply very fine songs, including "You Are What You Feel/Jacob and Sons", "Close Every Door" and the peppy "Go Go Joseph". Leading the 1982 Broadway cast is the enormously appealing Laurie Beechman in the role of the narrator. Joseph has been subsequently revived in bigger, bolder incarnations starring Donny Osmond and then Sam Harris, presumably to justify a big ticket price for what at heart remains a small-scale show--proof that you don't always get what you pay for. --David Horiuchi

Summary: A great recording!
Comment: Being an avid fan of Andrew Lloyd Webber's work I'm really filled with anticipation every time I receive one of his CDs. I have never been disappointed before and neither have I been this time.

The orchestrations are originally Lloyd-Webber's own and are very charming. The instrumentation is basically that of a rock band's (take away the harp and some other more "exotic" instruments). The vocals are performed very well and to the part (Tim Rice contributes to the backing vocals as well).

This recording shows Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat in its younger form, a form that attests to the two, then young, artists great talent. All in all, a splendid score and a great recording!

Summary: The best version of Joseph, if not the best recording
Comment: A full description of the history of "Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat" would be about as long as this record. It started out as 15-minute pop cantata for boys' choir, and grew over the next decades into the huge-spectacle, two-hour star vehicle we know today. This recording is by no means the first (I have two LP's of previous incarnations), but of all the recordings, it comes closest to catching the show in its best form. It is represented here as an hour-long pop-opera with all the core songs, but without the long dances, techno-remixes, repetitions, and extraneous material added on later. It is not associated with any particular production, but is a studio album recorded so that people could hear the full show (now twice as long as it had been the last time a recording was made).

To my mind, this is easily the most satisfying recording of the show. The songs are performed well, and much more simply - the "hamming up" of so much of the show, almost inescapable in modern recordings, is all but absent here. Examples of this may be found in songs like "One More Angel in Heaven", "Those Canaan Days", and the "Benjamin Calypso". All three were recorded here for the first time, and are performed without being so overblown as they are today.
The role of the Narrator, which was written to be sung by a tenor, is sung with great ease by Peter Reeves. (The modern convention of casting a pop-mezzo in the role requires several songs to be transposed down, and the singers still struggle for the high notes, if they try for them at all.) Gary Bond is a capable Joseph, and Gordon Waller is a fabulous Pharoah, mixing the required Elvis inpersonation with the pompous command of being absolute ruler of all that see sees.

That's not to say that there are no drawbacks. Most of the vocal harmonies for the Brothers had not been introduced yet, and the inventive orchestrations of the earliest recordings have begun to disappear. Pharoah aside, there is very little acting in the performances, and much of the liveliness and energy associated with the show is subdued. In spite of this, It is my favorite of the myriad "Joseph" recodrings, and represents the best version of the show put to record.

Summary: Best ever Joseph (at least on CD)
Comment: If you once owned the 1972 LP (vinyl) version, be aware that this is not quite the same thing. In particular, the female chorus on the vinyl is a brilliant caricature of the syrupy girl backing sound common in that era - and this feature had apparently been abandoned by the time the 1973 CD was made. That said, this recording does capture the original spirit of the pop cantata far better than anything later. The textures are cleaner, the rhythm is solid rock, there's less "show business" rubbish going on. The impersonation of Elvis remains awesome. And it's in the original (lower?) keys, with a male narrator as originally conceived (other reviewers have noted the difficulties caused to the other principal parts when the work is transposed to permit a female narrator). So if you like Joseph as pure music, and cannot get hold of the vinyl, buy this one.

Summary: One of many Joseph recordings... one of many.
Comment: One of my hobbies is singing narrators' parts from musicals. It seems strange, but I like narrators. There's the embodiment of all peoples in Che from Evita, the scarred and broken Judas in Superstar, the beaten optimist Tevye in Fiddler, the spooky dude in Blood Brothers... and of course the good old narrator in Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat.

This recording is the only surviving recording with a male narrator... I'm not saying he's better than the female ones (although admittedly he is better than most of them, but Maria Friedman is unbeatable). However, it is encouraging to listen to this recording. Er, presumably because it shows than men can be narrators too, or something.

But my job here isn't to compare narrators, it's to review the product. So here we go.
This recording of Joseph is... how can I put this?... faster than the others. It doesn't sound quite as 'polished' as the more recent Donny Osmond version, but it definitely doesn't sound incomplete. It's faster, upbeat, 'poppy' (if you would call a musical that) and light and bouncy. Even the sad, lonely 'Close Every Door' has a quick energy to it...

Credit where credit's due, though, the singing is quality, and they keep up with the music, the instrument playing is decent, there is a good Joseph, a well-put-together chorus, an excellent supporting cast and...

A MALE NARRATOR!

Hooray for equal opportunities!!

Summary: The best version of Andrew Lloyd Webber's First Musical
Comment: Hello.

I'm a 19 years old student from Paris, and I have a big passion for musical theater. The first "broadway musical" recording that I bought was this recording of Joseph and the Amazing technicolor dreamcoat (wow, it's long to write that name!), and I can say that it was one of the best good I had ever bought. I really prefer this version to the recordings of the 90's which sound too much "boys band" for me. This recording evocates the first years of Sir Andrew Lloyd Webber's brilliant carreer, and his project to bring a renewal to the musical theater. This CD has an historical interest, but I'm sure that it will bring you a lot of emotions too. The song 'Thoses Cannans Days" is just wonderful for exemple.

The lyrics of Tim Rice are also really nice.

Regards

Louis
