Editorial Reviews: With such lofty intentions, it was a shame Steven Spielberg's anthology series could rarely see a good idea through to a fully-rounded episode. This two-episodes-for-one deal demonstrates a couple that did work, although since the music was often better than the visuals that hardly matters! John Williams bookends each episode with his catchy title theme (included for completists), and as an often better half of any Spielberg project his vibrant score to "The Mission" deserves to be here. There are plenty of bold statements for brass as a seemingly doomed WWII fighter plane makes its forced landing. The surreal ending stays serious in the music thankfully. In contrast is Delerue's warm string-led score to "Dorothy & Ben". A story of swapping deaths to save a small girl is potent material, and despite some creeping harpsichord almost tipping into Tales From the Crypt territory, this is actually the easier on the ear of the two. --Paul Tonks

Summary: A short but good Album
Comment: I remember when this tv series first appeared on vcr and I rented them about four or five times just to hear Williams Main Title..... But to find out that Williams the grandaddy of film music(as well as Jerry Goldsmith) has done a cracking score alongside the late great Delerues is just delicous. The album has been loyally conducted by John Debney, (an up and comming film composer) alongside a cracking performance by the Royal Scottish National Orchestra.
So lets have a little look at the theme..... Mr Williams has composed a little ditty similiar to that of another 80's flick Spacecamp and it is as catchy.... I even thought a one point it may have been composed by Alan Silvestri as it has the same Back to the Future sound....
The Mission is from the original pilot episode all about a world war 2 bomber being shot on a bombing run and then attempting to get back home with the aid of a cartoon artist.....
The score could of been written for an epic movie as Williams stays away from format tv scoring.... Highlight tracks "Johnathon Begins to Draw" and "The Landing" Just listen to how Wiliams masterfully draws on a building suspense theme and then delivers all his themes into a one large end title sequence which will make you probably want to buy his entire repertoire on Amazon....
Delerues score is bittersweet and very reminiscent of Herrmanns The Ghost and Mrs Muir with a edgey clock theme to signify time and it's continuing movement.
Beautifully written and should leave a lump in your throat.... Delerues was a master at that.
Only complaint is that with a lot of Varese Sarabandes soundtracks..... It's not long enough..... GO BUY IT NOW!!!
