Editorial Reviews:
Between 1970-85 Roy Budd brought his distinctive, sometimes jazzy music to 27 often good, though rarely first- rate films. The one indisputable classic was Michael Caine's
Get Carter
(1971), which led to his scoring a series of tough, at times brutal thrillers including
Fear Is The Key
,
The Stone Killer
,
Diamonds
,
The Black Windmill
and
The Marseilles Contract
. These last two found Budd again musically supporting Caine, while for the star's 1971 retelling of
Kidnapped
he wrote one of his very best scores.
The Marseilles Contract
was bleak yet oddly humorous Anglo-French co-production mixing drug-dealing, cold-blooded killers and car chases. Budd fuses frenetic, dissonant action writing, intricate percussion on tabla and elements of the funk style prevalent in American urban thrillers of the 1970s. There are moments when the attempts at hip-coolness now sound dated, yet the quieter moments offer a hauntingly wistful, moody and appealing continental jazz. One of many reissues of the composer's music, which includes, on
The Re-Birth of the Budd
--an intriguing mix of soundtracks and jazz originals--
The Marseilles Contract
comes lavishly packaged with a fold- out poster and with excellent re-mastered sound.
