Editorial Reviews:
The story once circulated that session keyboardist Larry Knechtel could barely keep a straight face while recording the harpsichord solo on the Partridge Family's "I Think I Love You." Given that Knechtel later joined Bread, another totem of '70s (supposed) disposability, the tale seems to reflect little more than music-biz snobbery. The studio-created pop fronted by series stars David Cassidy and Shirley Jones stands up well for ears sympathetic to the era's have-a-nice-day Top 40 standards. Singles such as "I Think I Love You," "I Woke Up in Love This Morning," and "Doesn't Somebody Want to Be Wanted" remain high points of mainstream manufacture, with Cassidy's soft-sell emoting meshing with crafty arrangements and surefire hooks. These tracks have aged well.
The Definitive Collection
also offers a healthy selection of Cassidy's TV-era solo work, including his hit covers of the Association's "Cherish" and the Rascals' "How Can I Be Sure." Save for the exclusion of the Partridge's theme song, this CD lives up to its name.

Original recordings
Comment:
This is the nearest thing to a definitive David Cassidy Greatest Hits collection - up to 1974 when he left Bell records and went to RCA to do "I Write the Songs" and his few remaining hits thereafter. "Then and Now" has inferior re-recordings of some of these songs which miss the essence of the originals' vitality and sense of fun. The only problems with this album are: 1. "I Am a Clown" is butchered with the first verse mercilessly chopped off altogether so it begins with the chorus; 2. No "Puppy Song" which was a UK #1 (with Daydreamer as a double A side) and one of my favourites - can't imagine why they forgot it; 3. One or two unnecessary cheesy Partridge Family numbers like "Point me in the Direction" which shouldn't have been included; and 4. No original theme song for the Partridge Family which would have been a good final track.
Despite these criticisms - a great CD for the car - easy to get nostalgic and sing along! 5 stars!

David Cassidy and the Partridge family 30 years on
Comment:
I have waited for 30 years to hear the best of David Cassidy and the Partridge family. I was so disappointed with the 'Then and now' compilation by David Cassidy in 2002. Nothing compares to the original backing vocals of the Partridge family. If you are a fan of the Partridge family you will enjoy classics such as 'I am a clown' and 'It's one of those nights' and 'Some kind of summer'. A great compilation

BRILLIANT VOCAL POP
Comment:
This was my favourite band when I was a kid! Every generation has its teen idols, whether it be Donny Osmond, Shaun Cassidy or Britney Spears, but looking back at the music on this album I’m proud that I got a schooling in such catchy melodic pop. Some of these tracks were solo hits by David Cassidy, including Cherish, Could It Be Forever, Rock Me Baby and Daydreamer and they are of varying quality, being mostly slow romantic ballads. The best songs are by The Partridge Family themselves whose hits included the catchy I Think I Love You, Doesn’t Somebody Want To Be Wanted, It’s One Of Those Nights, Breaking Up Is Hard To Do, Looking Through The Eyes Of Love and my all time favourite, I’ll Meet You Halfway which reached the US Top 20 in 1971 and is a beautiful, soulful song with lovely piano and breathy vocals. Quite a mature song for a band that appealed primarily to the teen market. If you’re looking for brilliant vocal pop with a late 60s/early 70s flavour, the music of The Partridge Family will be sonic heaven for you.

ONE GORGOEUS GIANT CHUNK OF NOSTALGIA
Comment:
I loved this CD INSTANTLY..With the first track I was whisked back to the early seventies and was sucked in by the velveteen breathy voice of D.C.This is the first time in almost thirty years that I have put the stereo on repeat, and repeat and repeat. Thank God for personal stereos. You don't need to be a big P.F fan to love this ..you just need to have been "around" in your early teens in the early seventies.. This one oozes prepubescent memories, sing-a-long-ability and so more.....

Brings all the memories of teenage crushes flooding back
Comment:
When I first saw this on CD I couldn't wait to order and be transported back to those days of bubblegum music and lighthearted pop. The CD was not disappointing. From the first notes to the very end every happy nerve tingles and I found myself singing along to all the old favourites. A good mix of Partridge Family and solo David Cassidy. A must for all DC fans especially if, like me, your old vinyls spend more time in the cardboard wallets than they do on the record deck
