Editorial Reviews: Jingoism, beefcake, military hardware, and a Giorgio Moroder rock score reign supreme over taste and logic in this Tony Scott film about a maverick trainee pilot (Tom Cruise) who can't follow the rules at a Navy aviation training facility. The dogfight sequences between American and Libyan jets at the end are absolutely mechanical, though audiences loved it at the time. The love story between Cruise's character and that of Kelly McGillis is like flipping through pages of advertising in a glossy magazine. This designer action movie from 1986 is made more palatable by the canny casting of good actors in dumb parts. Standouts include Anthony Edwards--who makes a nice impression as Cruise's average-Joe pal--and the relatively unknown Meg Ryan in a small but memorable appearance. --Tom Keogh

    Summary: Best film EVER!
Comment: This is the brilliant film about being the best pilots, silly nicknames, and cheesy one liners! ( I feel the need, the need, for speed!) Brillant 'dog fighting' action scenes, and a great soundtrack, Not to be missed!

    Summary: Aerial Antics With Cheese
Comment: Recently released on Region A Blu-Ray, I watched this film again for the first time in several years.

Top Gun is not a movie that has aged well - particularly since release the novelty of seeing F14's in close combat and training exercises has been overtaken by flight sim games that let you do it yourself and the CNN/Discovery Channel imagery of real warfare in Desert Storm etc. Despite the premise that "Top Gun" teaches close air warfare, the real military doctrine is to avoid closing within gun range in the first place and rely on "Beyond Visual Range" methods to engage the enemy. If that fails, evade or retreat to save the plane (and pilot) to fight another day.

The plot and dialogue seems even more camp, cliched and dated than even just a few years ago, not surprising as they have been lampooned to death. Stand out cliche has got to be "Goose" - who really has disposable-comic-relief written on his forehead from the first scene.

I seriously doubt that any pilot with the attitude problem and disregard for orders that Maverick displays, would in reality be allowed anywhere near a Navy jet.

Focus on the flying scenes and make the tea when the cringeworthy romance interludes or oiled bare 'pecs are on. It's more camp than Priscilla, Queen of the Desert...

Three stars really for the cult classic status and the crystal clear Blu-Ray picture and sound but it's not hard to see why they never made a sequel. If you want a more realistic, down to earth story about naval aviation watch "Flight of the Intruder" - a much better movie.

    Summary: Dreadful Film
Comment: This has to be one of the worst films of all-time. "Starring" one of the most over-rated actors in the history of film, Tom Cruise, the film is just another "pro-American-aren't we great" piece of drivel.
There are no good points to this truly awful offering, its one of those films that ought never to have escaped the cutting room floor, a truly dreadful film. I only gave it one star because the site will not accept zero.

    Summary: Homosexual lovestory
Comment: This hilarious movie is based on the premise that a jingoistic Aviation Army flick does not require add-on extras like a plot, character development or good dialogue.

Well toned, well oiled tanned handsome men wander around the set in underwear (snapping each other with towels) high-fiving each other with puffed out chests.

Names like Goose, Slider, Maverick (our all American Hero), Viper,Jester, Rio and lets not forget Iceman, sum up this classic movie perfectly. The "plot" (using the term thinly) centres on a pilot (Maverick- Cruise), scarred by the shabby treatment his father received at the hands of the Aviation Military.

Maverick then becomes a Jet pilot. Before you can say the words "Take my Breath Away" Cruise, ahem, Maverick seduces Kelly McGillis, loses his tail gunner friend Goose, sings some karoke (Unchained Melody), forms a new and lasting relationship with Iceman his new lover, rides a motorbike, plays volleyball, and even experiments briefly with heterosexuality with Kelly McGillis, and finally takes out some dodgy Middle Eastern terrorist bogie MiGs fighter Jets all in the space of 90 minutes.

The dialogue is great and the screen writers won several awards : "Your ego is writing cheques your body cannot cash."
"Strike: Ghost Rider, this is Strike. We have unknown aircraft inbound Mustang. Your vector zero-nine-zero for bogey."
"I feel the need...the need for speed!"
"Slider: Goose who's butt did you kiss to get in here anyway?
Goose: The list is long, but distinguished.
Slider: Yeah, well so is my Johnson."

This is possibly the greatest movie ever made, and it knocked Ridley Scott off the top as greatest ever British director. The Top Gun director- Tony Scott (brothers) -went on to direct other great classics such as Domino (Kiera Knightly) and Days of Thunder (Tom Cruise). Top Gun is a true rarity. No joke.
