Summary: Essential Tiersen
Comment: While 'Le Phare' is a thrill from start to finish, 'Homme aux Bras Ballants' is definitely my favourite track: you begin by sympathising with this apparently unfortunate character, but as the song progresses a faster tempo develops to evoke mounting anticipation and eventually - as the orchestra reaches a climatic ending - his triumph. It is utterly astounding (and better still live). Other tracks such as 'La Noyee', 'Jours Heureux', and 'La Chute' are equally evocative. Along with 'C'etait Ici' and 'Rue des Cascades', this CD is a must; I urge you to buy it!

Summary: No sleeve-note hype shock !
Comment: The Golden Rule : 'Always beware of the sleeve-note hype'. The notes on Le Phare proclaim it to be Tiersen's 'most challenging work to date', blah blah. Well - it really is. And also clearly his best individual piece of work ( a qualification which excepts, of course, the Amelie soundtrack, which could have been titled 'Yann Tiersen - Greatest Hits' ), surpassing the excellent Rue des Cascades by some distance.

A truly great work. Utterly charming. Multi-layered. Hummable. Singable. Whistleable. Appears to be trapped in the CD played forever. How this man had not really generated any public awareness prior to Amelie is beyond me. How his style will be able to produce something to surpass Le Phare in future is a further mystery. But I really wouldn't be all that surprised if he manages to pull it off.
