Back to O Brother, Where Art Thou? [2000]

Unexpected feelgood film
Comment:
Weirdest feel-good-film you'll ever watch is this. Three Depression-Era convicts escape the chain
gang and set off on a right old adventure. The plot is a retelling of Homer's Odyssey but one that
is happy to accentuate the comic and the dreamlike rather than dwell all that Hell nastiness.
Redemption for the bad-lads comes in the form of an accidental creation of a hit bluegrass disc -
the very moment of that redemption will have you off the sofa and cheering. Uplifting, thoughtful
and feel good. Love it.

Classic Variation on a Theme
Comment:
Excellent fast moving film on Shakespearean themes in a modern setting. Good acting by a multitude
of stars and a flowing script make this a DVD for every collection, to be seen again now and then.
Should not be missed.
Whatever was valid in Shakespear's time applies still today, and
probably has since time immemorial... This film delivers.

A Film of Constant Laughter!!
Comment:
Pure genius again from the coen brothers!! One of their finest films and some of George Clooney's
finest work! I was a bit sceptical about the concept and the cast of this film and feared is was
going to be commerical coens lacking their usual quirks but this film delivers big time. The concept
loosely based on homer's oddessy works suprisingly well particularly encompassing the awesome
soundtrack in a humourous way. There is not one weak member of this cast and they all deserve praise
but for me George Clooney simply stood out. He made the role entirely his own with a fantastic
quirky persona and thick southern accent he had ulyssess everett mcgill down perfectly. His comic
timing along with the rest of the casts' is impeccable and Clooney,Tuturro and Tim Blake Nelsons man
of constant sorrow cloggers style dancing is very entertaining. Its a complete contrast to usual
Clooney sexy smoothy roles though you will still love him! If your fans of fargo, the big lebowski
and other coen works you wont be dissapointed! But if your not a coens afficionado but a fan of good
humour, good writing, good toe tapping music and good films you also will most certainly not be
dissapointed either!

A maelstrom of mirth and music
Comment:
It's a long time since I read Homer's Odyssey, so perhaps it's not surprising that I can't remember
seeing any of this story in that story - well, hardly any. There's the blind seer, the sirens, the
Cyclops, Pete seeming to be changed into a frog (the sort of trick Circe liked to pull), the fact
that Everett's first name is Ulysses and his wife's name is Penny (Penelope), and a temporary
associate of the boys attacks a herd of cattle ... . So, a few points of contact with The Odyssey,
but it really only fits where it touches. But who cares? This is a brilliant film. Best I've seen
in ages. I don't know why it's taken me so long to get round to watching it - probably put off by
the title. Silly me. I loved The Hudsucker Proxy, The Big Lebowski, Raising Arizona - all
fantastic Coen Bros films with dopey sounding titles. I should have just trusted them and watched
this film years ago. To make up for lost time I watched it 3 times in the first week I had the DVD
and kept skipping back to the beginning of the parts where The Soggy Bottom Boys sang "Man of
Constant Sorrow". Fabulous music. And the dialogue is so clever, especially when you consider that
the protagonists are more than slightly gormless - and they still give the impression of being
idiots even whilst delivering these sparkling lines. Great comic acting. Great acting regardless
of category, in fact. Another Coen master piece!

Fab film bit slow to start but gains speed, so much so that my mum couldn't leave the room.

The music is fab all them catching, toes tapping!
The subtitles are great and
let you sing along with the music, great for hard of hearing or deaf to follow.
