Editorial Reviews:
Quite often, the key to Debbie Wiseman's music for television series
My Uncle Silas
is a sense of playful mischievousness recalling the cheeky glint in Albert Finney's eye. Opening on a cue entitled "A Rogue's Apprentice", this is an hour of charming and lilting old English countryside splendour. HE Bates' short stories couldn't ask for better musical accompaniment as one bouncing melody gives way to another. Highlights include "Silas the Fighter" and "Sunday Best", which are exceedingly jolly; "The Widder", featuring a lovely piano solo (a composer trademark); "The Blue Feather", which is slightly mournful yet always graceful; and "Visiting Mrs Gadsby" which has the score's only dark colour evaporating quickly as it's whipped up in speed. The longest and perhaps loveliest cue is the six-minute "The Wedding" however, which plays through all of the score's rich melodies. With delightful solos throughout (notably flute and harp), this is the sort of music TV rarely deserves, yet always benefits from. --
