Editorial Reviews: The idea of remaking the Rat Pack's infamous shaggy-dog story cum Vegas heist thriller may have seemed ludicrous without a Rat Pack. But that didn't deter ever-inventive director Steven Soderbergh, who's again wisely teamed up with not only Out of Sight star George Clooney but also that underrated project's Irish-born club mixer turned scorer David Holmes. The resulting soundtrack is a spunky, cross-cultural joyride that careens from Perry Como's "Papa Loves Mambo" to the loopy hip-hop of Handsome Boy Modeling School's "The Projects", while paying some gratifying visits to Percy Faith, Arthur Lyman, Quincy Jones, the terminally cool Claude Debussy and, of course, King Elvis along the way. Holmes' own concoctions are as smartly retro-hip and seamless, slyly intertwining cool jazz-funk and smoky cine-Muzak with some dance-floor grooves that keep the musical tension boiling. The sharp dialogue snippets that bubble throughout seem a quirky throwback to soundtracks gone by, a sometimes oversized olive in Holmes' inviting musical cocktail. --Jerry McCulley

Summary: Police 69
Comment: Former DJ-turned-score composer David Holmes putting together an eclectic mix of tunes that includes jazz, rap, orchestral and even some Elvis for good measure. Cross-cutting between soundbites from the film and superbly composed tunes, the album jumps from modern-day tracks to classic Rat Pack-inspired songs without even a noticeable change in the tempo.

Holmes, who also arranged the first Clooney-Soderbergh collaboration Out of Sight, keeps the composition to a similar style of coolness, with ska-sounding trumpets, `70s flutes & drums and jazz bar guitars all adding to the mix. Opening with an elevator-esque tune backed by the first scene of the film, the album kicks in with "Boobytrapping", a tune that sounds eerily like the opening of Out of Sight, with noticeable changes making it jazzy enough for the `50s, but also dance-inspired for the new millennium. It's followed by the first actual track of the CD, Handsome Boy Modeling School performing "The Projects", with Truguoy and Del both duking it out in a versus atmosphere backed by a tremendous harmonica. Bing Crosby-clone Perry Como contributes with his classic big-band tune "Papa Loves Mambo", as does Elvis on a remix of the under appreciated "A Little Less Conversation", both tunes fitting exceptionally well with Holmes' textured symphonies.

It is, however, Quiny Jones' piece that struck us the most, music's main man playing a superb Miles Davis-inspired trumpet with a whole host of backing horns highlighting the piece. While it's not exactly a perfect composition ("Tess" and "69 Police" drag on for far too long), the soundtrack for Ocean's Eleven aims to be exactly like the film: nothing but pure entertainment.

Summary: Worst Soundtrack Album - Ever
Comment: Having recently watched the film - I thought "Mmm. I bet that'll be a cool soundtrack to listen to." Err. No. Unfortunately we have Mr Clooney & Co yapping over the intros and run outs of the tracks.

I bought this because I wanted to hear the music - not a bunch of actors talking over it.

Summary: Brilliant!
Comment: A great album with the music from the film. Holmes has written the music with the style that would not be out of place in Las Vegas. His attention to jazzy beats that almost reflect the original film. A great buy.

Summary: Ocean's Eleven Sountrack
Comment: Well, what can I say about this item?!
Besides the fact that it isn't half as good as I thought.
The only song in it that i like is: 69 police by David holmes,
which is the reason that made me purchase this on the first place.
This CD has the movie lines just before and after the songs, which becomes very annoying when you are trying to sit back and enjoy the music.
Besides, only a couple of songs are well known.
The rest is well bellow average.
So Unless you know the song i mensioned, or the other one (a little less conversation by elvis presley). I would advise you to stay away from this album soundtrack.

Summary: Fantastic! Shame for the songs not included
Comment: Pleas somebody told me what is the name of the song when George Clooney starts to be followed by Matt Damon (it is the same part when Benedict blows Ruben's hotel)I supposed it's played by David Holmes (just sounds like him). Great soundtrack but it was a shame that they cut lots of great songs. calvonbarajas@hotmail.com
