Editorial Reviews:
Biting, sometimes-base satire and humour populate this 21-track comedy-rock debut from actor-musician Jack Black and his band, Tenacious D. Sort of like a trashier, more casual and less musical Beck, vocalist-guitarist Black and guitarist-vocalist Kyle Gass--with help from Foo Fighter Dave Grohl, Redd Kross's Steve McDonald and Page McConnell of Phish--deliver oddball musings that will appeal mostly to fans of the talented Black, who has earned a following thanks to frenetic turns in the films
High Fidelity
and
Jesus' Son
. The songs and "bits" include the wonderfully, intentionally melodramatic "Wonderboy", Black ordering "four Chicken McNuggets" on "Drive Thru" and the funny ode to metaller Ronnie James Dio, where Black observes, "Dio has rocked for a very long time / Now it's time for him to pass the torch." With often intentionally droll and dumb humour, this more-comedy-than-rock debut is likely to achieve cult status.

I find this album absolutely hilairious and the lyrics are random in a funny way. The guitar is ok but the quality of singing is not meaningful enough and Tenacious D should take out thos ear piercing notes in tribute etc.

This is a great Comedy/Rock album, Jack Black & Kyle Gass are certainly a hilarious duo and great musicians. You can obviously tell their infleunced by the 80s hard rock metal. The best songs are Explosivo, Wonderboy,Dio (tribute to the awesome Dio), Karate, Friendship, Rock Your Socks Off & City Hall. If you like toilet humour and rock music then this is the perfect album for you Tenacious D are legends. Though it all really depends on what you find funny if you hate toilet humour stay away. I'm gonna see 'em in Dublin with metallica can't wait. TENACIOUS D ROCK!!!!

Comment:
After listening to this album for the twentieth time, and looking forward to the twentyfirst, I can honeslty say this album is amazing.
Im a Tool fan, so nothing hilarious there, but Tenacious D have a refreshing outlook with their rock. Its evident that they take their music and lyrics seriously, and put allot of thought into it.
There are a few songs on here that would cause offence, and the songs that dont make you think that they were put on the album not to, but they all have layers like most decent rock songs. there purpose is not to offend or to create comedy.
If you listen to tracks such as "F*uck her gently", you will instantly laugh. After a few more listens you'll realise that the guitaring is excellent, as are the vocals. Black sings with emotion in a song that deserves none. Reviewers have commented on this humour as offensive and prepubecent, i beg to differ. Its the sheer innocence of this comedy that make this album great.
Then there are tracks that have been carefully thought out and crafted. City Hall is a delightful poiltical satire. Yet this song is sung in such a playful and sarcastic way.
There are snippets of conversation that is hilarious on this album.
This album will have mixed opinions. So I dont disagree with any bad reviews. Its like a comedy DVD. If you've seen a show or comedy for over 20 times, it ceases to be funny. This album can have that affect, but the songs themselves can stand as decent rock songs.

Comment:
I bought this solely for the 'Tribute' track after having seen the music video of it.
The track in my opinion is worth the £3.97 charged for the album, but it seems such a shame that the lyrics for most all of the other tracks on this album are, not to put too fine a point on it, disgusting.
The pity is that the music is actually very good, it's just the lyrics that had me hitting the 'skip' button on the cd player.
I realise that the singers have perhaps intentionally created such lyrics to shock, but the 'Tribute' track to me just shows what a fabulous opportunity they lost in creating a truely magnificent album.
Oh yes, there IS a Parental Advisory label on the cd cover, so beware.

Comment:
Tenacious D's first album is a hugely entertaining mix of very funny comedy sketches (well, funny if you're not easily offended, that is) interpersed with some genuinely impressive rock songs ("Tribute" - fab track!).
This isn't meant to be taken seriously: these guys are comedians after all. You only have to look at the song list to know what you're going to get with this album so if you find swearing or sex jokes distasteful it really isn't going to be your thing. At all.
However, if songs about "humping discretely" make you giggle into your schnitzel then you'll love this album and will probably end up quoting it to all and sundry.
Enjoy!
