Summary: melancholy mood swings
Comment: Soundtracks from movies can disappoint, however, this is one that just inspires the listener to enter a melancholy mood and the haunting refrains linger like smoke circles in a room. This is one soundtrack that never gets boring, but produces visions of once upon a time in America. The movie is good too!

Summary: Absolutely beautiful from Maestro.
Comment: This score stands one of the best in Morricone's catalogue. This record is one of those few that makes tear in your eye when you listen to it. The music matches perfectly to the movie which is also a masterpiece. And this music is so melodically beautiful that it works on it's own also perfectly.
Morricone composed this music already in the mid seventies and there is again a beautiful voice of Edda del Orso on a few tracks.
Ennio Morricone is best known for his Spaghetti Western soundtracks but it's a shame that peole don't know how much great and different kinds of music he has composed. And this soundtrack is only a one very good exmple of his talent.

Summary: Brilliant Music
Comment: A very welcome addition to the ever growing catalogue of Ennio Morricone's music scores. Released before the DVD film version due out in June, 2003, it gives listeners the chance to sample the wonderful music score which enhances the film's mystical qualities. Beautifully performed, enhanced by gorgeous sound, especially if you have a really good Hi-Fi set up, it never fails to move. Some of the music is a little repetitive, and it may sound a bit overlong to some listeners too. But can be bought for a really good price and it is extremely good value. A worthwhile musical compliment to what is perhaps one of the greatest gangster movies ever made.

Summary: Wonderful music, but I wouldn't advise buying it yet...
Comment: Ennio Morricone's score to Once Upon A Time In America is a true classic, with extremely moving and memorable themes. It includes great orchestrations, female vocals, pan pipes and swinging jazzy numbers too. The bonus tracks are a treat and it even includes the more dramatic version of "Cockeye's Song" used when Bugsy is chasing the kids. The inside slip includes very thorough notes about the film and soundtrack. It is fantastic to see this soundtrack re-released after so many years.

However, it has an unfortunate flaw. On track 5, at about 45 seconds in, the music is shattered momentarily by a sudden noise that sounds like a skip, and it is very unpleasant. This seems to be a mass-produced problem originating from the master copy, as I have tried three copies of this CD in different stores, and all have the same glitch. I would wait a bit and see if the record company realise this and change it.

This is beautiful 5 star quality music, but I've only given it 4 because of the unprofessional mistake in track 5.

If you are really desparate to get this music, and think you can tolerate this glitch (and I would advise trying track 5 out in the shop), then by all means go for it. If you want a really pure piece of memorabilia, then wait a while to see if this problem is rectified.

Summary: Once Upon A Time... Leone and Morricone at their best!
Comment: This Special Edition is a definate improvement on the original soundtrack release. The music sounds great (remastered) and the extra tracks add layers of intrigue, particularly the Once Upon a Time.. "Suite" which blends the main themes and adds some very arresting suspense motifs. The sleeve notes are really good too, with some fine production stills and a great text about the "making of". This helps to bring the Leone/ Morricone collaboration to life. If you're a fan of the movie this will enhance your memory of a wonderful film. And if you're a fan of Ennio Morricone then you should definately have this one. Five stars ain't enough!
