Summary: Good - but not Marti...
Comment: To be honest, I was disgusted when I heard that Tell Me On a Sunday was to be revived - without Marti Webb. Being a huge fan of the singer, it didn't seem right to have a new version without her. Having said that, I found myself enjoying Denise Van Outen's version much more than I thought I would. Although she lacks the punch for songs such as Take That Look Off Your Face and the title song itself, she also manages to inject real feeling into songs such as Nothing Like You've Ever Known. I'm not a huge fan of the new songs such as Haven in the Sky and Speed Dating, although Tyler King is very good.
All in all, a good try, I thought. Then I saw Marti Webb reprise her role in Birmingham - no contest. Come back Marti!

Summary: Who told her she could sing?
Comment: As a fan of the original version (maybe that's a clue?) I went to the revised stage show in anticipation of a great night. The re-working of the show for the 21st century is great but - oh, woe- talk about mis-casting. This woman can't sing!!!She is absolutely hopeless, and that is carried through onto this recording. As a singer she makes a good dancer, and she certainly isn't up to sustaining this demanding one-woman show. All the digital and electronic wizardry in the world can't hide the fact that she struggles with every note. This recording is a real bummer. Avoid like the plague.
p.s. Have just been to see Marti webb in the touring version of the show. What a difference! What a performance! Bravo! Record that; please!

Summary: Lad-et to Leading Lady
Comment: After seeing the Stage Show I rushed out and bought this soundtrack and hoped it lived up to the real thing. And boy it did. A stunning vocal ability and superb music makes this a new favourite of mine. Denise has made the transition from the lad-et she was in Big Breakfast, to West End Leading Lady. After wowing both West End and Broadway in Chicago, Tell Me Soundtrack is a superb follow up. A soundtrack that is easy to listen to and sing along with, without having long fillers and boring love songs inbetween. Fun and fantastic.

Summary: It's not the end of the world (If it's bitty!)
Comment: Denise Van Outen really shines in this recording! Plenty of performers could have probably pulled this off much better than Denise, however, I think she is absolutely brilliant! (Well not bad for a small-time presenter from London!) She was amazing in Chicago and now she really revels in Tell Me On a Sunday. The new songs are good and the modernisation of this one-woman show is very amusing. The only set back to this new version is that it seems to be bitty. In that I mean that we dont really get the idea about what is going on in her life other than who she is dating! How is she affording to live in New York? How long do her relationships last, and what does she get up to with these men? We are not really sure, nor are we intended to know, I guess! I think that we understand her excitement and we can feel her heartbreak caused by her many relationships (or men!). This show encapsulates many of the dreams and, indeed, sadness of young women of her intended age. (Though we aren't even told what that is!) Overall, I think that the quality of this recording is good, the songs are catchy and we can really warm to Ms Van Outen. I ain't taking it out of my CD player just yet!

Summary: Good recording of an excellent show
Comment: If you've seen the show in Gielgud Theatre, you'll know what to expect: a one-whoman musical with excellent singing, both up-tempo and intense ballads. Sharp texts finish the show.
This album is a perfect recording of the show, with only the orchestral end missing (and of course the looks of Denise).
