But I give this DVD five stars for the music more than anything else. 'Tribute' really is one of the best rock songs in the world.
The video for Tribute is of course pure brilliance and the HBO shows are terrific.
The premise for the HBO series is that Jack and Kyle are two boorish, hopeless, overweight losers who play a satanic mix of cliché laden eighties fantasy metal and potty mouthed pseudo rap on their acoustic guitars. Firmly believing themselves to be the greatest band in the world they are a fixture at a small town open mic night where they play to the general bemusement and indifference of the tiny audience.
This is great, it works, it is terribly terribly funny.
This 2 DVD set comes unstuck when the boys are seen playing before massive audiences, indulging in ribs, groupies and hi-jinks on their plush tour-bus and generally living the dream. Slowly the horrible realisation dawns, they're not acting, they REALLY are like that.
The sparse one liners and occasional amusing situation are not enough to justify the copious extra footage. The 'D' actually work against themselves, the same songs are repeated again and again, until it is clear that what passes at first listening for spontaneous ad-libbing is in fact meticulously rehearsed and repeated in every performance.
So, amusing enough in a Spinal Tap meets Beavis and Butthead kind of way, but the 'D' need to rein in their egos a bit, one DVD with a bit of quality control would have been plenty.
