Editorial Reviews: Sofia Coppola has, with two elegant movies, proved herself a talented director with a keen eye for interior life. She's also got great ears. For Lost in Translation, the story of a May to December friendship in Tokyo between two displaced Americans, the score is a tonic for jetlag. Coppola prescribes a dose of shoegazer pop, from My Bloody Valentine's chiming "Sometimes" to Jesus & Mary Chain's fuzzed-out "Just Like Honey". The music nails the hazy conscious state of actors Bill Murray (as a movie star in a midlife crisis) and Scarlet Johansson (as an emotionally marooned twentysomething). It also provides a safe, warm envelope in which they can enact their overseas adventures. Working with producer Brian Reitzell, Coppola lured Valentine's Kevin Shields into providing several slices of dreamy indie-rock and sonic wallpaper, as stylish as it is formless. There's a welcome bit of Japanese goofiness, a funhouse-mirror reflection of US folk-rock courtesy of early-1970s band Happy End. And a "hidden" track provides the audio of Murray, in the film, doing his sleepy karaoke version of Roxy Music's "More Than This." --Marc Weidenbaum

Summary: Lost in music
Comment: Bought this cd because I couldnt get the Death in Vegas track, "Girls" out my mind (the ahh-haa... one), which is the play over on the menu screen on the DVD. I havent been disappointed. "Girls" and "Just Like Honey" (played at the end of the movie) are pure quality, and the other tracks are all growers. Just like the film I get something more out of the cd everytime I listen to it. Its well put together too, with a sleeve containing pictures from the movie that tell the story. The sounds are also in line with the DVD, so if you want its easy to imagine where you are. And if that wasnt enough, if you are a fan of the film then its worth getting this cd just for the bonus track at the end of "Just like honey"...

Summary: A must-have if you liked the film
Comment: If you liked the lost in translation movie (and I did, very much), then this album is a definite must. When I listen to it, I immediately remember all of the scenes from the movie as the music goes. My personal favorites are 'girls' (death in vegas, who also did the excellent album 'scorpio rising') and 'too young' (phoenix), which instantly brings back the memory of my favorite part of the film. The closing track 'just like honey' is fantastic. What else to say - there are squarepusher, air,my bloody valentine... as I realized (correct me if I'm wrong) Sofia Coppola choose the music herself - really good choice of tracks!
There is even a hidden track.
What I like the most about this album is that it combines the guitar sounds with electronica, but all tracks go together in harmony. Also the design of the cover book is excellent.
Buy this and enjoy!

Summary: Lost on some, not on me.
Comment: This is a fantastic accompanying soundtrack to a fantastic film. Perfect for all occasions, lounging around, background music at a dinner party, driving music, it sounds good wherever, whenever. It's both thought-provoking and uplifting. Track 5; 'girls' by death in vegas stands out as the exceptional number, but there are so many other good ones on here, even one in Japanese, you won't know what they're saying, but you'll like it.

I bought it for the one song by death in vegas, and loved the whole album. Highly recommended.

Summary: Outstanding and memorable
Comment: Thankfully, as a film that doesn't have explosions and action to fill the airwaves, the soundtrack is even more important as you are very aware of it the first time. The music beautifully captures the mood, the eloquence and the very simple joys found in the film that seem to have eluded some people who have watched it. I saw the film with a friend and at the end I came out feeling uplifted and touched. He just asked, so what was that all about? What was the point of it? Why didn't someone get shot or blow something up?

The dreamy quality of the movie puts you in a sort of trance like state, and the music is a significant factor of this, as well as the story. for me, music is all about feelings, and not just the latest teen angst, and this soundtrack brings many emotions to the surface. Classically beautiful and melodious at times, its unique and remarkable like the movie.

Summary: EXTREMELY GOOD!
Comment: Brilliant soundtrack to a truly brilliant film. Reminds you throughout of many of the excellent scenes from this wonderful film. Quite a diverse mix of music but it is the more electronic based tracks which really stand out for me. Highly recommended to lovers of decent artistic music and films alike.
