Summary:
His best studio release
Comment:
Like many of his fans, I've often found Loudon's studio releases to be a little disappointing. Songs developed over years on the live circuit seem to lose their edge when aired in the studio environment.
As the previous reviewer stated, great music often seems to emerge from periods of great emotional turmoil and the death of Loudon's mother appears to have given him a focus sadly missing on so much of his other work. This obviously deeply affecting event has however inspired him to write with a depth and emotion that we haven't witnessed since his early career. The songs are dark and emotional but at the same time have a power and resonance which is immediately uplifting. The arrangements are uniformly superb and (other than the sickly cloying sweetness of White Winos; a fan favourite for some unknown reason), every song is focused and worthy of inclusion.
Before the release of LMoE, I would have immediately recommended the live "Career Moves" to anyone keen to sample his work for fear of them being put off by the erratic nature of much of his studio work. Well now I'm glad to say that I can heartily recommend LMoE to anyone with a soul. Career Moves is still his most accesible work but LMoE his most enduring.

Loudon Loses Mom
Comment:
Someone once said that all great art comes from great pain.
Well there can be few pains greater than losing someone you love, especially when she's your "best friend".
Loudon Wainright III (for me) has written some of the funniest and some of the saddest songs, and some of his saddest songs are on this album. Chronicling the loss of his mother, none is more beautiful than "White Winos" , where he fully combines the comic and the moving, with a stunning melody and an amazing lyric. "When we got to the old man / that's when I'd switch to beer" - hear it and weep (and laugh). In fact hear "White Winos" once, and it'll never leave you.
The album mostly deals with death, but don't let that put you off. Some of the 'Old Loudos' best work is here.
As he says : "I don't want to live / but what else can I do" .
