Editorial Reviews: Like their peers the Funk Brothers, the ongoing, criminally unheard legacy of the Buena Vista Social Club's various legends continues to impress, and the emergence of 71 year-old Manuel Mirabal (a trumpeter of some repute in Cuban circles), for his spellbinding debut album, comes as no surprise. Those familiar with the premise of the Cuban grooves that were rediscovered through the original Buena Vista Social Club album and it's subsequent spin-off solo works will agree that the sound, feel and playing here ranks up with the greatest moments of this wonderful genre. Recorded as a tribute to Arsenio Rodriguez, a pioneer of Cuban music and modern salsa, even those unfamiliar will find much to love in this collection, not just in the fiery, masterful trumpet playing of El Guajiro, but also in the various guest vocalists (even newcomers and er, Gorillaz fans should recognize the none-more soulful vocals of Ibrahim Ferrer on "Deuda". Similarly, the backing musicians sound like the kind of band that are totally in simpatico with each other and work well to produce the finest grooves. With highlights too numerous to mention, this CD is essential to all, and a quiet contender for album of the year. --Thom Allott
Spotlight customer reviews: Customer Rating: Summary: Arsenio Rodriguez revived! Comment: I have just read David Garcia's book "Arsenio Rodríguez: and the transnational flows of Latin Popular music". Luckily, there are now a few original recordings available of this son montuno style master. He was copied by many of the younger salsa performers, like Johnny Pacheco and many others, but was often barred from performing on the major stages. Racism, his own lack of adaptation to the big town up beat tastes, and for other reasons, Rodriguez was forgotten by many. Mirabal's record consists only of Rodriguez' music, which is more subtle, intricate, and challenges the dancers to feel the music, not only the beat of the drums. Read the book, listen to Mirabal, and then go to the source! Customer Rating: Summary: And the beat goes on... Comment: I have most of the BVSC CD's and this is the best if you like the more brassy sound as favoured by the 2007 Buena Vista tour: it's partly a reflection of the sad demise of the (mainly) vocalist members of BV but also closer to the more "big band" Afro-Cuban All-Stars' music. Guajiro Mirabal is such a great trumpet player; get this and play it loud on a hot summer's evening!! The first Afro-Cuban All-Stars was fantastic and I really enjoy Ruben Gonzalez. Well this is one you can buy with absolute confidence - it does not disappoint.There are no duds among the individual tracks; execution is brilliant,vocals are beautifully delivered, production is crystal clear and Mirabal's trumpet dazzles - the whole ensemble really cooks.
