Editorial Reviews: Seether's follow-up to their promising, moderately successful 2002 debut, Disclaimer, and its spottier, hastily repackaged 2004 sequel, was reportedly beset by fighting with their label--friction that dictated everything from profanity-free lyrics to a title change (the original name was the telling Catering to Cowards.) Yet the band effectively rises above those constraints, if only by largely sticking to Disclaimer's tried-and-true formula of seasoning the generous blasts of angst-metal (such as the raging opener "Because of Me") that are its true stock in trade with more evocative ballads like "The Gift" and "Plastic Man." The latter tracks hearken back to "Broken," singer Shaun Morgan's duet with girlfriend and Evanescence singer Amy Lee, yet find their own restless, emotive substance without her. --Jerry McCulley

Summary: Amazing?
Comment: This is definitely Seether's best album. Standout tracks include Because of Me, Remedy, Truth, Burrito, World Falls Away, I'm the One, Simplest Mistake and the final track Plastic Man. The album is incredibly underrated esspecially in the UK. I would say that I hope to see more of the same from them but after their latest album was such a disapointment, this album will probably go down as their best.

Summary: Disclaimer II was pretty good..... this is very good!
Comment: Karma and Effect is the follow-up to Disclaimer II and the band have progressed since their previoes album. Disclaimer II had some truly fantastic rock songs, such as Gasoline, 69 Tea and Fine Again, but there was a tendancy for the band to go into "Slipknot mode" and scream/grunt words in the middle of most of their songs, which I was never keen on.

Wisely, Seether have chosen not to do that so much in Karma and Effect. You can see they are starting to drift more towards a more commercial sound. They're not selling out because they retain the anger in the heavier songs on the album and they retain the dark nature of most of their songs. I think Seether are moving in the correct direction and as a result Karma and Effect is a superior album to their previous effort.

The album opens in a similar way to Disclaimer II with a hard rock song, Because Of Me, to kick things off - in fact, it's one of the best songs on the entire cd. The first four tracks are great and include the single Remedy. Track 5, called Burrito, deserves a mention because it has a splendid opening riff (possibly the best riff to be found on the album). The album finishes on the gentle acoustic track called Plastic Man - it's basically just Shaun Morgan and an acoustic guitar. Oh, and there is an outro track, the only appeal of which is that the singing is in Seether's native South African language.

Karma and Effect has a nice balance of somewhat delicate moments mixed with plenty of full-on hard rock. The guitar work seems stronger than the previous album and there are definite signs of the band progressing.

I haven't quite given Karma and Effect full marks because the second half of the album isn't as strong as the first half and there are one or two tracks that I do occasionally ommit from listening to when playing the cd. Having said that, none of the songs are bad - it's just the album loses some of its appeal towards the end; it doesn't quite grip me as much as the opening half.

Overall, this comes highly recommended for any Seether fan. If you're new to Seether and are thinking of investing in one of their albums I recommend you give this a try prior to Disclaimer II.

Summary: An amazing follow-up album
Comment: Seether's new album, Karma and Effect is a much darker, impressive, amazing, powerful follow-up to Disclaimer. The opener, "Because Of Me" is an dark, punishing track, with a main guitar riff similar to "Downfall" by TRUSTcompany and dark lyrics. "Remedy" is one of my favourite tracks on the album. The main riff sounds similar to "Freak" by Silverchair (but that aside). It is a brilliant song, with a great melodic hook to it. Songs "Truth" is another great song, like "Remedy". "Gift", "Given" and "Never Leave" are beautiful songs, which show Seether's more melodic side and shows that the band are trying to go more toward the mainstream. "Burrito" is great, with a main guitar riff reminisisent of Metallica and melody reminisisent of Creed. "World Falls Away" is a brutal, dark song. "Tongue" is a very dark, disturbing song about contemplating suicide."I'm The One" is catchy song, which you'll love, the main riff sucks you in. "Simplest Mistake" is a great song about the pressures of fame. "Diseased" is Seether at their brutal best. "Plastic Man" is a beautiful acoustic ballad, it is a little similar to "Broken". The last track "Come Drink with Me", even though it's sung in afrikaan, shows that Seether have a sense of humour.

Overall, Karma and Effect is brilliant. It is more melodic than their debut album, Disclaimer but still just as heavy and aggressive. I think that Karma and Effect is break through for Seether as far as it goes over here in the UK. Critics compared their debut album to Nevermind by Nirvana, saying that Seether rip it off, but this album is anything to go by, then Seether have really came into their own.

Summary: Seething with Talent.
Comment: I purchased this record at the same time as Disclaimer II on the basis of one track, "Broken", and i havent been disappointed. For those of you that have heard or own Disclaimer, Karma and Effect offers the same vocal brilliance along with a much more muscly guitar sound.

The album opens with some top tracks, Because of Me and Remedy will undoubtedly become classics, leading into Truth.

For me, the best track is actually the Outro. The song is melodic and beautiful in its own strange way (its in Afrikaans!), it also shows a completely different side to the Seether that we hear throughout the bulk of this album.

A continuing heavy rhythm filled album. For those who like Creed and Alter Bridge especially.

Summary: Interesting move more towards the mainstream
Comment: Seeter have become less like Slipknot and more like Nickleback or Evanescence. Is this a good or bad thing. For me the less like Slipknot the better. Standout tracks are The Gift, Remedy and Diseased, each with plainer lyrics and catchier riffs than tracks on previous album Disclaimer. If you like your rock with a bit of meat on it and don't get depressed easily this coud be for you. Several years ago Staind produced a similer album and received huge airplay and became momentarily a global sucess, Seether have seemingly set out to acheive this yet whether they succeed is yet to be seen.
