Spotlight customer reviews: Customer Rating: Summary: Minimalist Opus Comment: Director Christopher Nolan dispenses with the services of his regular Minimalist/Ambient composer, David Julyan, in favour of Hollywood heavyweights, Hans Zimmer and James Newton Howard, who ironically come up with a very Julyan-esque score. Dark and austere, like Nolan's masterful film, these atmospheric Minimalist pieces are a million miles from the whimsy of Danny Elfman and the bombast of Elliot Goldenthal, and come across like Philip Glass on steroids. Just as Nolan reinvented the Batman franchise, Zimmer and Howard create a totally original soundscape to complement the movie. Bleak, disturbing and thrilling this is film scoring of the highest order. Customer Rating: Summary: An amazing piece of music Comment: I loved the Batman Begins film, but was barely aware of the soundtrack - during the movie it subtly adds to the mood without ever being particularly obtrusive. As an independent collection of music, it really comes into its own. I find this music incredibly beautiful. It does not convey to me as much emotion as many pieces, but has a natural beauty to it instead. Listening to it makes me feel the same way as watching a beautiful sunset - it can even cause shivers to run down my spine in places. In turns relaxing and exhilarating, I have no hesitation describing it as a work of genius. Customer Rating: Summary: A Fantastic Soundtrack ! Comment: This is a fantastic compilation of the original score; the film itself is great, the soundtrack is even better ! When I watched the film I couldn't help being taken in by the accompanying music and it didn't take long to also recognise the composing influence of Hans Zimmer. I thought his OST for the film 'Gladiator' was excellent, this is perhaps superior. The quality of the emotion and power in the music can be appreciated from the tracks 'Myotis', 'Barbastella' and 'Nycteris'; but the track 'Molossus' is the pinnacle of the collection and is quite simply mind-blowing (it is used in the first Batmobile chase scene and is very much background music so is easily missed !). The brass and percussion sections contribute greatly to make some truly exhilarating pieces. I also think some of the instrumental tones generated are unique; the contribution of the electric cello being the best example. Customer Rating: Summary: Hans Zimmer + James Newton Howard in the SAME soundtrack?!!! Comment: Wow. Just...wow. Some elements are unmistakably Zimmer - the long held note before moving up a tone, and Newton Howards signautre use of drums makes for THE BEST soundtrack I have ever heard. I mean combine these two guys and nothing's ever touching it. Ever. You need a 20Hz and up FLAT audiophile system to really enjoy this though :D Customer Rating: Summary: Fantastic Song Naming Comment: I thought this album was emotional, dark and haunting. The song titles are well thought out--each is a different meaning for bat! Example, Eptesicus means "House Flyer" (obviously in latin)and Myotis means "Mouse Eared". My favourite on this entire album is "Corynorhinus" which is the latin for the Ozark Big Eared bat. Wicked awesome stuff. More Reviews
