Comment: The list of adjectives to describe the wondrous qualities of Howard Shore's fantastic score is endless. If you thought that the theatrical soundtracks were good wait till you hear this! The scores for LOTR are wonderful and when you listen they seem to carry you away to Middle-Earth. I totally understand why some people are annoyed about having to fork out for another LOTR related release - and this CD Box Set isn't cheap! I too hope that they aren't going down the all-too-familiar churn-it-out road that some other franchises have gone down. The only consolation is that LOTR releases seem to be of outstanding quality and when they say you get extras they do deliver e.g. just look at the mind-blowing extras on the Special Edition DVDs! I have to conclude with my opinion that this stunningly superb piece of musical genius is worth buying if you love LOTR music! Customer Rating: Summary: more than amazing, yet... Comment: Like most people who love movie soundtracks and/or the Lord of the Rings trilogy, I adore the soundtrack written for the three LOTR films. I also bought the trilogy soundtrack box set as soon as it came out, a few years ago. This box set, however included only the original soundtracks. Now that this majestic box set appears, I feel cheated. Again, because the same thing happened with the movies being released on DVD, with newer and supposedly better versions coming out every 2 years it seems? I fully acknowledge the sheer genius of this soundtrack. But I can't give it more than 3 stars for the sole reason that the whole industry built around Peter Jackson's Lord of the Rings trilogy is going too far in my humble opinion. People who fell in love with these films and the soundtracks are constantly asked to pay up for the newest version of a release. Forced would be a better word. THere are a lot of people out there who are willing to pay to own the "ultimate collection" (if even there's ever going to be such a thing).. and the record company/producers/... know it. So this is basically a plea for more transparency about what releases they are working on, even when another release has only just reached stores. So: brilliant soundtracks without many -if any- flaws. The art work is also a feast for the eyes. But a shame that I had to pay for something that I already owned snippets of in the original soundtracks. Such a pity.. Customer Rating: Summary: Amazing Comment: wow! Wow! WOW! This complete recordings set is amazing. Despite already owning the soundtrack, this version is well worth the money. As well as all the music included on the original soundtrack this has more music, more singing, more of everything. It features the COMPLETE score that Howard Shore recorded and all the songs sung by the actors. It looks great. The only downside is the price but once you see and hear, that will no longer be an issue. I can't wait for the next two. Customer Rating: Summary: Stunning music, DVD fails to deliver! Comment: What a lovely Box set! When I read that there was going to be a DVD in Dolby 5.1 I was extatic! The DVD in the Star Wars 111 Soundtrack made me realise the amazing depth and detail we just do not hear on regular CD. Alas! The DVD of the Fellowship score does NOT have 5.1 surround sound. In fact, none of the 3 copies I have bought even activate the Dolby function on the amp. I am sorely disappointed and feeling duped. Has anybody else noticed this? Customer Rating: Summary: Superb Music Comment: As the LOTR films came out, I religiously bought the soundtracks, and have to say, I'm addicted to them. The Complete Recordings for FOTR encourages that addiction, which is a good thing! This is essentially the complete soundtrack to the extended version of the film, whereas the soundtrack originally released contained snippets from the theatrical edition. For anyone who hasn't seen the extended versions of the films - GO WATCH THEM, they're far superior to the theatrical versions. And this follows in the soundtracks - this extended version is far superior to the original soundtrack. What particularly makes the set for me is the DVD - the complete score for the extended version, in 5.1 surround sound! It's like being in the room with the orchestra! Some people might ask, 'why don't you just watch the film, it's got the same music! What's the point?' If you're one of these people, don't buy this, because you just don't get it. The entire point of buying this is to appreciate Howard Shore's spectacular score as a work of art in itself, rather than as part of the greater whole of the FOTR movie. The only reason I don't give this five stars is because of the cover - it's packaged in a reinforced cardboard, which doesn't really look like its going to stand the test of time.
