Back to Count Arthur Strong's Radio Show - First Series

Summary:
Character Comedy At Its Best.
Comment:
What makes this particular comedy creation even more remarkable, is the fact that he is played by a
man far younger than the character himself.
I've been lucky enough to see Stephen
Delaney (the man who plays Arthur) live a few times now, and it's incredible to see his
transformation from a thirty-something guy into an eighty-plus music hall star, (so incredible in
fact, that when I passed him at the venue bar after my first Count Arthur show, I didn't even
recognise him).
This is a man who puts his whole heart and soul into his work, and the
effort is clear to see-or indeed hear-if you have been lucky enough to listen to his two brilliant
radio shows.
The "reviewer" who calls this "comedy for old people", clearly knows
little about comedy, and listens to hardly any. If this person did, they would know about Delaney
and his amazing ability to fully embody his charater, and would know that this is part of his appeal
as a live (or indeed radio) act.
It is great to see anyone in comedy who puts so much work
into developing a beleivable character with such depth.
Stephen Delaney has been doing
Count Arthur on the comedy circuit for quite some time, and this is reflected in his perfect
characterisation.
As well as been able to heartily recomend this CD, and any other
Count Arthur CD's you can find on the net, I can confidently say that he is also a must to see live,
if you ever have the opportunity.
Not all comedy needs to be crude to be loved by young
people, I know many people my age who love Count Arthur, and count myself amoung them.

A comedy 'Tour de France'
Comment:
I really would never have written a review of Count Arthur Strong's Radio Show if it hadn't been for
the 'review' that, 'i wrote this "I did"' posted, entitled, 'comedy for really old people'. For a
start what's wrong with that as a concept? Anyway, frankly, it's entirely innaccurate in this case.
I've been to two recordings of this show and the cross section of the audience at them both has been
anything but 'elderly'. (whatever that is?) I'd say that the 30 somethings were the majority. But
there were teenagers there, as well as a few of the older comedy going bewildered. Feel free to
review, but don't patronise. And base your reviews on what you know to be true, not glib asides.
Long live Count Arthur

A Comic Tour de Force
Comment:
The Count is an inspired creation. I've listened to the episodes on these discs umpteen times and
still find them entertaining because the characterization is just so brilliantly observed and
convincingly realized.
This is character based comedy at its very best and hopefully
the Count's creator, Steve Delaney, will one day get the wider recognition that he deserves.

Comedy for really old people
Comment:
Judging by the discussion this show generates on the BBC 7 message boards, Count Arthur Strong's
material tends to have the grey mob roaring with laughter. Whilst the only under 50 who admits to
chuckling is a rather obcessive student named Reese who also enjoys what I consider to be the most
insipid radio sitcom in history: David Tennant's Double Income No Kids Yet. Count Arthur Strong is
not quite as bland and flippin dreadful as the afore mentioned travesty. But it's a pretty close
thing.
Then what do I know, I hate Mr Bean too.
And that's what you have here folks,
the Count's naff ramblings and the 'hilarious' adventures they produce are the audio equivalent of
watching a middle aged man put his trunks on over his trousers for the 400th time. But don't take my
word for it, listen to the sample....and weep.

What a stupid count!
Comment:
Like others, I stumbled across the Count on Radio 4. He is very, very funny. Bungling, pompous and
with no idea how the world sees him. He's another Alan Partridge but he's older. Great stuff!
