Editorial Reviews: Far from collapsing after the departure of founder member Brian McFadden, Irish boy-band Westlife have gone from strength to strength. In the last two years they've undertaken successful tours, delivered top-notch singles and albums and generally behaved like the optimistic, non-stop pop sensations they are. Having recently inked a new five-album deal with Sony, this trend looks set to continue well into the future too. The Love Album, their eighth studio LP, sees the band offer something a little different. Covering 11 of what they consider to be the greatest love songs of all time, it presents a mix of classics and less obvious choices. The album begins with lead single, "The Rose", a reworking of Bette Midler's 80s smash hit, and proceeds idiosyncratically but smoothly through Bonnie Tyler's "Total Eclipse of the Heart", The Commodores' languorous "Easy" and evergreen ballads such as Kasey Cisyk's "You Light Up My Life" and Joe Cocker's "You Are So Beautiful (To Me)". There's also a sterling collaboration with Aussie pop princess Delta Goodrem - a cover of Air Supply's "All Out Of Love" - and a rousing rendition of the Righteous Brothers hit "You've Lost That Loving Feeling" to wrap things up nicely. Along with mistletoe and candlelight, this is an Xmas must-have for all incurable romantics.--Danny McKenna
Spotlight customer reviews: Customer Rating: Summary: Kinda Odd?! Comment: This album is different to any of their others, as it seems to be a weird selection of solo performances by Shane and Mark (not complaining on the Mark point). Some of the tracks do mix the vocals, but in large part the the Cutie Blondes (their official names) are basically missing. Even when there are backing vocals by them, you can rarely even recognise their voices. Having Mark singing, using more of his amazing potential (particularly on track 2) is fantastic to hear. His voice is effortless and has a sense of soul that I don't think Shane's does, however great. So again, not complaining here. It is odd though that the album is solo/duo/band/hint of 'boyband'. As a whole, it feels as though two seperate artists collaborated (and maybe brought a couple of mates - or were they on holiday somewhere?)... so yeah, kinda odd. Now the choice of tracks is no suprise and it could have been truly awful, though Shane stretching his range and style in his vocals and as previously mentioned Mark being allowed to shine and not hold back as much as usual, saves this album for me. Only 3 stars, (wish I could have given it 3 1/2) because it still is what it is - Westlife doing what people find irritating about them; singing predictable songs, which are covers and still not showing what they could really do and blast out of 'easy pop'. They could prove people wrong with one album - but they don't. Watch them live or on DVD on tour and you see so much more talent than on any recorded album. Shame. Oh... and the irony of Westlife releasing a love song album?! Like Eminem releasing a rap album. I had a little chuckle... then bought it. Hmm... It features all 11 songs of the main album from 'The Rose' to 'You've Lost That Loving Feeling'. All the tracks are covers and with Westlife magic you hear them a fresh. The deluxe version includes a bonus disc of six additional tracks. A worldwide exclusive track called 'Butterfly Kisses', 'Nothing's Gonna Change My Love for You', 'If', 'Solitaire', 'Still Here' and 'Total Eclipse Of The Heart' (Sunset Strippers Remix Radio Edit). Customer Rating: Summary: Its all right but i hope they arnt gonna go all ronan and do just covers all the time now Comment: I love westlife and its depressing that i have to go another year without a proper new album to listen to. Its a covers album really which makes me think that the managers wanted an easy buck instead of giving them some proper songs you know like i dunno "wont it be quicker if we give them some old songs to learn then they can come in sing them and that will be easy and cheap to us and we'll go on to working with a newer band". its such a shame because i think they could easily be doing really well now if they just brought out a new origional song. I hope that westlife stick around and dont go down the pan after this, i hope we get another proper album!! I love the guys so ill give them 4 stars but if they pull another useless cover album,i'll give up on them! Customer Rating: Summary: Music for people who don't like music.... Comment: Like Phil Collins in the 80s, Westlife just don't seem to know when they should quietly go away. Covering insipid, mawkish love songs is just not a cool thing to do, though they've certainly shifted enough units in the last few years. And how about writing a song of their own sometime? As I said, this kind of dreck is music for people who don't like music, along with rubbish from X-Factor 'winners' like Leona Lewis. Get a (West)life!
