Editorial Reviews: Pile together a blue-ribbon cast, a screenplay high in quirkiness, and the Sundance stamp of approval, and you've got yourself a crossover indie hit. That formula worked for Little Miss Sunshine, a frequently hilarious study of family dysfunction. Meet the Hoovers, an Albuquerque clan riddled with depression, hostility, and the tattered remnants of the American Dream; despite their flakiness, they manage to pile into a VW van for a weekend trek to L.A. in order to get moppet daughter Olive (Abigail Breslin) into the Little Miss Sunshine beauty pageant. Much of the pleasure of this journey comes from watching some skillful comic actors doing their thing: Greg Kinnear and Toni Collette as the parents (he's hoping to become a self-help authority), Alan Arkin as a grandfather all too willing to give uproariously inappropriate advice to a sullen teenage grandson (Paul Dano), and a subdued Steve Carell as a jilted gay professor on the verge of suicide. The film is a crowd-pleaser, and if anything is a little too eager to bend itself in the direction of quirk-loving Sundance audiences; it can feel forced. But the breezy momentum and the ingenious actors help push the material over any bumps in the road. -- Robert Horton

Summary: It's Not About Winners Or Losers
Comment: Little Miss Sunshine is a glorious tale of a young girl who wants to be a beauty queen - and has her grandfather to help her get what she wants to learn about the business. She lives with her family, the Hoovers, who are a bit quirky; Dwayne, who doesn't want to talk to anyone - Frank, the depressed scholar, who doesn't really want to be there, when he tried to commit suicide he had to live there due to his suicide watch. There's mother Sheryl - who seems clueless and Richard, the crazy guy who thinks he knows how to be a winner. There is also the grandfather - Ed, who's a coke addict; but he has a good heart, he just enjoys his vices.

Anyway, they decide to go to a beauty pageant in California - miles away from their home, so they go off in a dodgy VW Camper van, to have an interesting road trip that will divide and conquer their attitudes, ideas and views.

This is an excellent movie - really enjoyable with a great story and script. Abigail Breslin as Olive works well, her future does look very rosy, and the supporting cast are amazing too, Paul Dano did well as mute Dwayne. The cinematography is beautiful, with great scenery and the yellow VW really is like a character in the movie.

I really did enjoy this film, and felt the time flew away. I like the way there are so many underlying plots and ideas, and I can see watching this a few more times will give me different prospectives.

The DVD is a bit minimal; has the four different endings and the commentary, so I am looking forward to the Blu-Ray edition coming in February; which will have deleted scenes, a couple of featurettes and deleted scenes.

This is worth a look, the film has every emotion you could want from a box office smash, and much much more.

Summary: Celebrate your inner freak!
Comment: A truly uplifting film. Will make you laugh out-loud and cheer on the hopeless Hoover family throughout. A dysfunctional bunch of freaks who manage to laugh at life's absurdities. You'll watch it again and again. Brilliant!

Summary: Prob in my top 10 of all time
Comment: I adore this quirky, funny, endearing, unique and slightly bizarre film. I think this might be the film equivalent of marmite, but if you're in the 'love it' camp then you'll probably, like me, develop a love affair that will last a lifetime. Seen the movie quite a few times now and know I will never tire of it.

Summary: very good but.....
Comment: Frequently hilarious, never boring, unpredictable and well-written, filmed, directed and acted. But it stretched credibility a little too far and if, like me, you don't approve of beauty pageants for young girls, and of the bad swearing in the presence of children, you still won't be overly impressed by what on the face of it is advertised as something of a family movie!

Summary: Seriously bad film - one star too good
Comment: I am amazed people give this film positive reviews in my opinion it is the worst film I have seen in a decade and should feature close to "The Wild Women of Wonga" in the worst films of all time list! I found it not at all funny and completely uninteresting / uninvolving at all levels.

I have never been moved to review anything on Amazon before which speaks volumes on just how bad I thought it was.
