Editorial Reviews: While much was made of the fact that Marie Antoinette elicited boos at Cannes, the many favorable reviews attracted less attention. Inspired by Antonia Fraser's biography, Sofia Coppola fashions a portrait that's just as dreamy as The Virgin Suicides, her first literary adaptation, and the Oscar-winning Lost in Translation. Set to a soundtrack of post-punk (a conceit that adds more interest than resonance), the teenaged Marie (Kirsten Dunst, quite good) may be shallow, but she's rarely unsympathetic. The story begins in the late-18th century as the Austrian Archduchess agrees to marry Louis-Auguste (Jason Schwartzman). After bidding adieu to her mother, Maria Theresa (Marianne Faithfull), she travels to France, where King Louis XV (Rip Torn) sets the rules--and the list is endless (Judy Davis' Comtesse de Noailles is the primary enforcer). As for the Dauphin, he's just a boy, really, with more interest in his key collection than their marriage bed. Should Marie produce an heir, it might be enough to sustain her--since life is nothing but an endless shopping spree--but clouds gather on the horizon as an impoverished populace rises up against their extravagant leaders. Coppola merely suggests what happens next, although history paints a darker picture. Filmed in and around the Chateau of Versailles, Marie Antoinette is a riot of rustling gowns, sparkling jewels, and Manolo Blahnik-designed shoes. To say that style trumps substance does its maker a disservice, but the look of the thing does leave the deepest impression. --Kathleen C. Fennessy
Spotlight customer reviews: Customer Rating: Summary: Do not watch this movie! Comment: I was looking forward to watching this film as I truly enjoy period dramas. I was very disappointed in this movie. The music was terrible, there were no decent dialogues for the characters, the direction was not impressive at all. I was waiting for a plot of the story but nothing, no real development of the story an at the end I could not wait for this movie to be over. I am glad that I did not spend money to rent this movie. Do not watch this movie!I wish I could get back my 2 hours time spent on this one! Customer Rating: Summary: Not impressive at all Comment: This film brought home to me why I pay my TV licence (reference to the BBC and good period drama's), as a period drama it was completely unbelievable, whether it was the American accents, or modern dialogue, or may be even the modern sound track, it just doesn't work. With regards to the story line, the only good thing I can say about this film is, that it left so many unanswered questions that I had to spend longer on the internet finding out what actually happened, than I did watching the film. Then I realised how much was just skipped over giving a completely false impression of Marie and the current situation. Customer Rating: Summary: Brilliant! Comment: This film was alot better than I believed it was going to be. The film was very different to any Teen film I have seen before. This film was very colourful and had a new romantic style and feel to it as this was what the directer was aiming for. The settings and costumes were amazing also. Its got everything you could want in a film, its funny but still has that depth of seriousness, its sad in parts and its sexy. I think that it's the type of film that you either love or hate but its a must see movie! Customer Rating: Summary: Vive la guillotine Comment: As the story of Marie Antoinette is well-known, the one saving grace of this film is knowing that the main character will be executed. After enduring this film it's a shame that her fate wasn't applied to that of Kirsten Dunst and Sophia Coppola. The film is vacuous, there is no story and there isn't a single character one feels remotely concerned about. The film was so bad when I watched it in the cinema that I was the only left when it had ended. I only stayed because it was summer and the air-conditioning was pleasant. Plus there was the execution. This film seems to be trying to tell the story of Marie Antoinette through the viewpoint of a succession of MTV videos. As such and in keeping with that genre it should have been three minutes long. This film replaces the awful "Kids" as the worse film I have ever seen. At least "Kids" had a point to make. Customer Rating: Summary: Thank God for fast forward buttons. Comment: This is the worst film I've every seen. I felt like giving up about an hour in. The start wasn't too bad but nothing the actors said or did really portrayed the time period well. The fast forward button was to get to the speaking parts which I thought might of made the film interesting, i was wrong, what they said had little consequence. If you like looking at scenery and have no desire for a plot then this is the film for you. The only thing the film did show was the size of the budget they had to spend which must of been massive, although their takings must of been very slim. I wouldn't recommend this to anyone.
