Disappointing, to say the least
Comment:
If you really must get a score CD to one of the Bourne movies then go with Bourne Supremacy. I was expecting good things of this one but after giving it a couple of spins I can see why Varese Sarabande opted out of releasing this one (Decca picks this score up); it's mainly just recycled stuff from the previous films. But don't expect anything as frantic as 'Bim Bam Smash' from second movie here.
My main problem with this score is that is just so generic and random. Yes, the Bourne theme is in there, but it's hardly a masterwork. I feel like anyone who wanted to convey the hectic, unpredictable nature of the movie through music could have come up with this score. Some tracks (the CD is a mere 50 minutes) work alright as an adrenaline burst but don't expect anything even remotely articulate or emotive.
It reminded me a lot of Hans Zimmer's score to Black Hawk Down, but that at least had some haunting sounds to it. Unless you are really desperate to have a new, upbeat version of Moby's Extreme Ways on CD then just give this a miss and pick the CD for The Bourne Supremacy.

Same same
Comment:
This is the same as the other Bourne soundtracks. Same same. I like the movies, so I like the tracks. But must admit, I cannot listen to it other than alone. If you like the movies, buy a couple of the soundtracks or all three. Listen to them in the car.

More of the same but darker from Powell
Comment:
Firstly, in The Bourne Ultimatum there are a lot of cues directly taken from the first two films' soundtracks (such as `The Apartment', `Jason Phones It In' and `Berlin Foot Chase'). So, inevitably, this album will never be a true soundtrack to the third film as it doesn't include a lot of the music used in the film. However, on this CD, Powell does give us a dense and dramatic score - more so than in Identity and Supremacy. He expands on his use of percussion and it is more present here than in the soundtracks to the first two films. Heavy drumming as well as bells are used to great effect. The same themes crop up here and there and are often re-orchestrated which is gripping and refreshing. This gives the score a much darker feel and builds suspense well. Brass is used in parts for the first time in Powell's Bourne music too which gives this score a much grander feel than the two predecessors. My personal feeling is that if you liked all the music in The Bourne Ultimatum then it's probably best to consider the soundtracks to The Bourne Identity and The Bourne Supremacy as well. Although you get a great deal of Powell's themes on this CD, the only way to get the whole package of the Bourne music would be to purchase the first two. Overall - a great, powerful and percussive score, with a nice new version of Extreme Ways on the end. An enthralling listen!
